Modular Hex Terrain

Modular Terrain Systems

TUF Modular Hex Terrain is available in two distinct hex sizes, each designed for different play styles, table space needs, and production methods. Both systems share the same design philosophy but are not compatible with each other.

Terrain Sizes

TUF25 – 1 Inch Hex Terrain

TUF25 uses hexes that measure 1 inch flat-to-flat. This is the most compact modular terrain system we offer and is ideal for smaller tables or games that benefit from dense layouts.

  • Hex size: 1 inch flat-to-flat

  • Manufacturing: 3D printed

  • Availability: Etsy and Shopify

  • Customization: Custom configurations available by request

TUF25 has been especially popular for games like Lancer and for groups that want maximum flexibility in a smaller footprint.

TUF32 – 33mm Hex Terrain

TUF32 uses a 33mm flat-to-flat hex, matching the hex size commonly found on boxed hex maps used in games like BattleTech. This system is designed to feel slightly larger and more spacious without becoming oversized.

  • Hex size: 33mm (approximately 1.29 inches) flat-to-flat

  • Manufacturing: High-quality injection molded parts

  • Availability: Shopify only

TUF32 is a separate system from TUF25 and is not interchangeable with the 1 inch hex terrain.

Design Philosophy

Simple by Design

At the heart of tabletop gaming is creativity. TUF terrain is intentionally designed with a clean, neutral appearance so it doesn’t lock you into a specific genre or theme.

A single color tile can represent grass, forest, toxic sludge, alien terrain, or anything else your table imagines. This simplicity gives Game Masters the freedom to reinterpret terrain without needing dozens of specialized pieces.

Modular Construction

The TUF system is built around three core components:

  • Base Plates form the foundational hex grid and allow terrain to be moved, rotated, or stored in larger pre-built sections.

  • Terrain Blocks come in multiple hex sizes, making it easier to build elevation without excessive stacking.

  • Color Tiles are kept separate so terrain height and surface type can be customized independently.

This approach reduces the total number of pieces required and helps avoid storing large volumes of redundant terrain.

Interlocking System

TUF terrain uses a vertical interlocking mechanism rather than traditional horizontal locking. Earlier designs made it difficult to remove individual pieces without disturbing surrounding terrain.

The current patent-pending interlock allows terrain to stack securely while still being easy to assemble, disassemble, and modify mid-build.

Choosing Between TUF25 and TUF32

TUF25 remains an excellent choice for compact tables, custom builds, and players who prefer a smaller footprint.

TUF32 was developed to fill the gap between compact terrain and oversized systems—large enough to align with common hex-based games while remaining efficient in both storage and table space.

About Custom Terrain Decor

Some players enjoy adding handcrafted decorations such as trees or scenic elements, and those builds can be stunning. While this is possible with TUF terrain, TUF32 tiles are sized specifically to accommodate 32mm miniatures, and additional decor may occupy space intended for figures.

For tables that prioritize miniature placement and tactical clarity, keeping terrain surfaces open often provides the best gameplay experience.
